Attack Your Goals-How Bad Do You Want It?
By Dr. Rick Kattouf II
You have set some amazing goals for yourself. You are ready to
go and ready to make some lifestyle changes. Whether your goals revolve around
body composition change, improving overall health, improving athletic
performance, becoming a world champion athlete, etc., it is game on!
Congratulations on taking that first step and setting that big
goal because that is a very important first step.
Now, with that being said, while setting the big goal is a great
first step, it's just that, a first baby step, because now the
work starts. Think of it like this… Someone wants to start a business.
This is a fantastic goal, no doubt. One of their first steps is to get their
business cards printed, awesome. The new, soon-to-be business owner is super
excited about their new business card and they show it off to everyone on
social media. And what follows is a bunch of comments like, "yippee",
"yahoo", "you're awesome", "superstar", "you
rock", and much more.
As nice as those comments are and as good as it feels to have a
business card, it's just that a "business card", not a business and
not yet even a successful business. This is a very nice first baby step, but
now the work begins; it’s time for the grind and the hustle. Having a business
card does not mean you have a business, it’s simply just a small baby step.
So, how do we attack these big goals that we have set for
ourselves with the veracity, intensity, stick-to-itiveness, commitment, hard
work, focus, dedication and passion that it takes to become successful? Well,
it's pretty simple… We have to stick to the plan like a stamp to an envelope in
order to get to where we are going. To become a mega-success (and yes, whatever
goal you have set for yourself is a big one, therefore, it is a mega-success to
achieve it), there's no room for error. Sure, there's plenty of room for error
if we want to the average, that's easy. But, the reason we set the goals we did
is not to be average, rather, these goals we have set for ourselves is setting
us up for greatness.
It can be a harsh reality for individuals when they realize how
much work, time, effort and energy it takes to achieve such goals. This should
not surprise anyone; if it was easy, everyone would be great. Those that stick
to the plan like a stamp to an envelope, stay on task, eliminate all
distractions and bring to the table a ‘whatever it takes’ mentality, will be
setting themselves up for great success.
Here's another great example in the world of athletics.
Individuals will sign up for a goal/event/competition one year in advance. It
may be a marathon, Ironman triathlon, obstacle course race, etc. And much like
getting that first business card printed, when these individuals hit that pay-now
button for their event/big goal, understandably so, they are excited, as they
should be. They post this all-over social media to let the world know what
they've signed up for. And what follows is the same comments as mentioned
above, "yippee", "yahoo", "you're awesome",
"superstar", "you rock." Now, keep in mind, they not even
accomplished anything yet; they simply just signed up and paid for an event
(now the real work begins, so let’s save the yippee, yahoo and you’re awesome for
when the goal is actually accomplished).
While this may feel good, this doesn't make the journey any
easier. Signing up for the event is easy, but now it’s time to pin those ears
back and dig those heels in. The work has just begun and now it's time to
grab that lunch pail, put on that hardhat and go to work each and every day. People
soon find out how much work, time, effort and energy it takes to truly live the
lifestyle, each and every day, and not letting anything derail you. Because
this is what it takes, sticking to the plan, each and every day, like a stamp
to an envelope in order to get you where you want to go.
No matter the goal(s) you have set for yourself, let's start
this great journey and let's stick to the plan. If during your journey, you
become unglued, it's time for a knee-to-knee, eye-to-eye conversation. Grab a
chair, place it in front of the mirror and take a seat. Look at that person
staring back at you because it's now time for some tough questions and some
tough answers. Ask that person staring back at you, "how committed are
you?" "How bad do you want this?" "Does your commitment
level match your goal?"
